Daly City, known as the “Gateway to the Peninsula“, is located on the northern edge of San Mateo County. The city limits stretch from the Pacific Ocean (on the west) all the way to the San Francisco Bay (to the east). It is conveniently located in the middle of two of the largest job growth zones in California, the San Francisco and San Mateo counties. While the economy in the area is very diverse, the main sectors are in retail, healthcare, and small business.

The economy is mainly dependent on the retail sector. Daly City has three major shopping areas within its limits, the largest being Serramonte Center with a total of 860 000 square feet dedicated to retail space. The Mission Street retail corridor, which borders San Francisco, and the Westlake shopping centre (which offers 620 000 square feet of retail space) are the other two major regional shopping areas. The city has over 3.1 million square feet of retail space, and out of all the cities in the county Daly City has the largest taxable retail sales.

The second largest sector in Daly City’s economy is in the medical industry. The largest employer in the city is Seton Medical Center, who has approximately 1 500 employees. There are 357 beds in the hospital, and it holds the reputation for being one of the leading medical facilities in the United States. There are several other medical institutions in the area, such as the Physician’s Medical Center, San Francisco Heart Institute, San Francisco Neuro-Skeletal Imaging Center, Seton Medical Office, and the Spine Care Medical Group. The newest facility in the area is the Kaiser Permanente, which consists of 130 000 square feet of medical offices and clinics. It can be found at 395 Hickey Boulevard near the I-280.

The labour force in the area is generally well educated due to the proximity of educational institutes. Within a ten mile radius are six colleges or universities and an additional 12 more can be found within a 50-mile radius.

The population of Daly City is primarily over the age of 18 (78%) with the median age being around 35. Surprisingly, only 12% of the population is over 60. Almost 50% of the total labour force work in local jobs.
